Ikat museum is a PC initiative born out of a strong passion and dedication to preserving India’s oldest textile practices
Ikat is a work of art. This is a royal reed of a traditional handloom expressed in Ikat by Shri. Bichitra Meher | Cofounder of the Ikat museum
He is the the second generation weaver pioneering the revival of lost art of traditional hand spun ikat in western Odisha.
As a young weaver at his age he didn't settle for the mediocre work. His quest for learning from the old lost tradition was fulfilled when he found his master. Under his guidance, he continued alone with his work in khadi. He was untouched with the growing commercialization and continued making work of art that languished in his old trunk with some of the most prestigious state and national award against it. His farsightedness ensured that all members in his family including his wife, both the sons and daughter in laws were all skilled in the indigenous skills involving natural dyes, nadi weaving and phool kanda, traditional needle embroidery on loom. Punarnawa recognized his work and dedication and came together to help his heritage sustain. We are engaged since past 3 years with the khadi revival work. This Ikat museum is a tribute to his work of art and modesty. We hope this living & functional museum will become a platform to engage dialogue and knowledge exchange programs for students and individuals who are connected through art, culture , design & innovation from across the world and help his village and the Western Odisha with an identity that it long deserves.
