Vintage Vari Di Bagh wedding dupatta is given by the bridegroom's family whereas rest of the phulkaris the bride brings from her family. It is a heavily embroidered dupatta on a handwoven khaddar base with a silk floss thread. The bagh (garden) is usually embroidered in two colors of silk thread, usually yellow and white to replicate gold and silver (sohna chandi) with variants which take their names from the number of colors used like pachrangi (five colors), satrangi (seven colors), naurangi (9 colors). The vari da bagh, may include a differently embroidered triangular portion which covers the bride’s head (ghunghat bagh). Bagh was a visual symbol of prestige and indicative of the family’s affluence. This pattern has a variety of lozenges of a growing size included in each other. Regardless of the two colours of pat is used, these lozenges are easily revealed by the reflections of light and has a golden and silver hues. Various lozenges here symbolises the Earth, the city, the ancestral house. There is also a small house beautifully embroidered with panchranga in one of the corner. You will also see the clever introduction of courtyard all over the body. Border has a meenakari work. The work here is joined in two parts showing the day and night phase of the earth. The bride was wrapped in this Bagh by her mother in law while she hands over the house keys. This later became the family keepsake and was inherited by the boy's bride on their wedding day. In West Punjab, following the birth of a boy, it was customary to start a Vari-Da-Bagh, and the grandmother would place the first stitch.
