Dhokra is an ancient folk art tradition prevalent in India, particularly in the eastern states of West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. This craft is renowned for its exquisite metal casting using the lost-wax casting technique, one of the earliest and most sophisticated methods known to human civilization.

The process of creating Dhokra art begins with shaping the desired design using beeswax, which is then covered with a fine clay paste and dried in the shade. A thicker outer layer made of a mixture of red soil and rice husk, with holes for pouring the molten metal, is applied next. The piece is sun-dried and then fired in a traditional kiln called a 'Bhatti,' causing the wax to melt and exit the mould. Molten brass is then poured into the cavities created by the melted wax. After cooling, the solid metal is carefully removed, and the finishing touches of cleaning and polishing are applied.

The final step involves embellishing the Dhokra piece with intricate patterns and details using strings of wax. Each piece is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, reflecting the skill and creativity of the artisan.
